Dr. M. Nazmul Karim is currently the Department Head of Chemical Engineering at North South University. Previously, he worked as an Associate Professor in the Department of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet, Bangladesh. He completed his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Dhaka and his Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering from Kyushu University, Japan.

Prior to joining the faculty at UT Austin, Dr. Karim was a postdoctoral fellow at the California Institute of Technology from 1994-1995. He has been a member of the UT Austin faculty since 1995, and he served as the department head from 2010-2016.

Dr. Karim’s research interests include nanomaterials, energy storage, and environmental engineering. He has published over 200 papers in these areas, and he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Institute of Chemists.

Previously, the Fuels and Petrochemicals Division of AIChE had named an award after him, the Professor M. Nazmul Karim Award in Process Control and Automation. Karim’s interest was in model-based control, nonlinear control, data-based control, optimization and bioprocesses analysis and automation.

Students and faculty say Naz was an admired leader with a deep commitment to engineering. His students and colleagues celebrate his contributions in the field of chemical engineering, and are grateful for his pursuit of excellence.

Karim earned a degree in Bangladesh at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology. He then went to the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology where he earned his master’s degree and doctorate. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Texas A&M University announced the death of Dr. M. Nazmul Karim. He was the holder of the T. Michael O’Connor Chair II and he head of the Artie McFerrin Department of Chemical Engineering, an office he held since 2012. Karim died Friday, June 21, 2019 in Delf, The Netherlands, while on a work trip where he was giving the M. Sam Mannan Memorial Lecture Keynote..

Karim, in an impressive career, has authored more than 250 academic publications and given 400 presentations at conferences. He also co-authored the textbook “Chemical and Bioprocess Control” that is used by over 50 universities worldwide. He has graduated 25 PhDs and was honoured as an AIChE Fellow.
